I bought a pretty heavy punching bag a few months back. I started punching it without gloves. But sometimes when I punch hard my wrist would bend. But the pain goes away after few seconds. And I’ve heard that punching the bag without gloves is essential to make your knuckles hard. But does this have any effect on the longer run? Would I get arthritis in the future because of this?
Any help would be appreciated. thanx
Punching The Bag Wihtout Gloves…is This Safe?

Bleh, Karateka spend years smashing a wooden board with only tightly bound straw and rope as padding on it. I punch my bags without gloves all the time, unless I actually go out to train, just do more push-ups on your knuckles, and strengthen your hands and wrists some more before you do so, and start punching lihtly, working on technique and speed rather than power, and gradually build it up. If you do somthing like knitting, sewing, or anything kinna fiddly and intricate that requires your hands and fingers like that, you will have an even more decreased risk of getting arthritis or somthing like that. punchign the bag with ONLY gloves, is worse for your hands, as gloves dont allow you to clench properly and the bones in your hands are kinna loose, if your gonna wear gloves, wear handwraps too. Work those elbows! that way you dont have to worry about gloves and handrwaps! ^_^ besides, elbows are one of the most hardcore moves out there…
No.
tape your hands and wear gloves. the chance that you will break your hands and wrists are too high. it may not feel like much now but when your in rythmn and one bad punch would lead to a break.
ure wrists arent supposed to bend…they only bend when u do palm strikes…punch correctly…straight, hard, firm, and fast recoil….punching bags without gloves do make ure knuckles stronger…its better when u punch harder things….
The problem is that the damage is cumulative so you don’t feel the damage that your are doing to your hands now. You will in five or ten years if you don’t wrap your hands and use a decent set of gloves. Hardening your hands is a gradual process that is done over a long period of time and it is more gentle in nature than pounding on the bag. Things like doing push-ups on your first two knuckles as well as gently punching buckets of sand and dried beans and then running them under alternating cold and hot water you do over a long period of time to harden your hands. As for your wrist some fighters tape their wrist slightly before wrapping their hands to give it a little bit more support.
punching a bag without gloves is bad idea b/c you can cut your hands and bruise your knuckles. and you need to wear wraps in order to keep your wrists strait. that is what they are for. go to ringside.com and order some or just go to a local sporting goods store and find a pair. I would recommend the ringside brand b/c they are long and give you enough to get your wrists tight so they don’t move.
Punching a heavy bag without gloves is fine – you know you have had enough when the skin starts coming off. It is important though to avoid punches like hooks into a heavy bag without wrist and hand protection.
well when your wrist bends its not good, you need to keep your wrist straight, keep focused when you punching the bag and you should avoid any mistakes its when you get lazy or tierd when you slip up
Its safe to punch the bag without gloves but if you are really worried about it you can still tape your wrists up, its actually more dangerous to punch the bag with gloves and no wraps than it is to just punch the bag without anything
you need gloves and you are probably punching the bag wrong that is what is messing your wrist up dont punch it when it is swinging into you
not really, but it will hurt at first
When you start using the punching bag, start with your gloves on so you get the feel of hitting the bag. If your wrists are bending back, chances are you are hitting it at the wrong angle. Start off slow and pay attention to your form. Build up the muscles in your arm before going Rocky style on it. Make sure you are punching with your whole body and not just throwing haymakers.
You can hit the bag without gloves to toughen your knuckles up. But don’t hit it full force. Just light jabs. That will toughen them up without breaking the skin. You’ll bust your fingers if you go all out without gloves.
if you punch it with out ur gloves it will hurt at first, then ur hands will get tougher. your wrists shouldnt bend, keep your wrists firm. pain is only weakness leaving the body.
be on the safe side and use the gloves
yes
Start out training for short periods of time and with low power. Slowly build time on the bag while adding power to your shots.
A regimen of Chi Gung should help prevent arthritis and disfigurement latter on in life. Good Luck
